Lutheran Campus Ministry of Fresno
Fall 2006 Program Highlights: Lutheran students and young adults gather weekly to share a meal and reflect on important faith and life issues. These "Bread and Belonging" gatherings on Tuesday nights and “Bridge” gatherings on Sunday evenings challenge us to carefully consider our role as God's people in the world. Weekend retreats, a variety of fellowship events, and numerous service projects are occasions for growth within the community of Lutheran students and young adults throughout the academic year. Lutheran Campus Ministry continues to expand its many service-learning projects in the Fresno community. The SMILE Center utilizes university students as tutors and mentors for at-risk children at two elementary school sites. In Direction Sports, 30 refugee children from the Academy for New Americans are tutored in reading and coached in basketball -- a unique approach to building quality relationships between refugee children and university students. The University HOPE project began construction on its ninth house for a low-income family, and members of the Fresno State community selected the new homeowner family. During the Christmas holidays, Lutheran Campus Ministry helped match 100 university students with 55 disadvantaged children for a Giving Tree party that provided the children with gifts of toys and clothing. In addition, Lutheran Campus Ministry gathered and wrapped Christmas gifts for over 200 children from low-income families. Each of these service-learning projects empowers university students to use their God-given gifts as change agents in the world. Lutheran Campus Ministry continues to be an active and caring presence on the college and university campuses in Fresno. Lutheran Campus Ministry staff are involved in such activities as:
